What is IVR?
Interactive Voice Response — the keypad menu system.
Interactive Voice Response is the automated menu that answers a call and asks the caller to press a number to reach a department. IVR routes by keypress rather than by understanding, which is why callers so often press zero to escape it. Voice agents replace the tree with a conversation: the caller says what they want and is routed on meaning rather than on a digit.
