What is RTP?

The protocol that carries the actual call audio.

Real-time Transport Protocol carries the media stream — the audio itself — while SIP handles the signalling around it. RTP is designed for timely delivery over perfect delivery, which is why a poor connection produces choppy speech rather than a delayed conversation.
